The coco bean, which is used to make most chocolates, contain a chemical call theobromine, a toxic substance for canines. The potential toxic effect of chocolate is based on two criteria; type of chocolate and the weight of the dog. Following is a basic chart of theobromine concentration: Milk chocolate has 44mg theobromine / oz of chocolate (154mg/100gm): toxic dose for 50 lb dog = 50 oz of milk chocolate. Semisweet chocolate has theobromine / oz of chocolate (528mg/100gm): toxic dose for 50 lb dog - 15 oz of semisweet chocolate Baking chocolate 390mg theobromine / oz of chocolate (1365 mg/100gm): toxic dose for 50 lb dog - 5 oz of baking chocolate. Small dogs are much more susceptible to chocolate poisoning. However, it is advisable to keep chocolate products out of reach from all dogs, known to have a sweet tooth. If you did not witness your dog eating chocolate but suspect the occurrence, look for signs of anxiety, pacing, hyper excitability, excessive thirst and urination, vomiting, or seizures. Then, call your vet and inform them of the type of chocolate, how much was eaten, how long since it happened, and the weight of your dog. If your dog indulged itself within the last couple of hours, the vet may either instruct you on how to induce vomiting or they may require the dog's stomach to be pumped. In the event that more than a few hours have past, the theobromine will have entered your dogs system. In this case, the vet will need to provide a proactive treatment such as intravenous fluids and drugs to control hyper excitability to assist while your dog's system detoxify itself. |
